Nepal's controversial Chief Justice resigns

Kathmandu [Nepal], Mar 15 (ANI): Chief Justice of Nepal Gopal Prasad Parajuli resigned from his post on Thursday.

Parajuli, who has been marred with the controversy over his dual citizenship due to variation in his date of birth submitted the letter of resignation to the President Bidhya Devi Bhandari, the President's office confirmed.

"Honorable President of Nepal Bidhya Devi Bhandari has received the letter of resignation from the Honorable Chief Justice of Nepal Gopal Parajuli as per the Constitution of Nepal's Section 131 (a) which will come into effect from 15th of March, 2018," Hariprasad Dawadi, Spokesperson for the Office of the President said in a release.

Parajuli, who administered the oath to newly elected President Bhandari on Wednesday, was relieved from the post by the judicial council.

A press statement issued by the Judicial Council stated that CJ Parajuli had been relieved of his post after careful examination of his birth and academic certificate that showed him having attained the superannuation age (65) seven months ago. (ANI)
