Sinai [Egypt], Oct 13 (ANI): At least six soldiers were killed on Friday when gunmen attacked a checkpoint in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula.
"Unidentified gunmen attacked a security installation in the city of Al-Arish with grenades and small arms," several media reports reported quoting army spokesman Tamer al-Rifai saying in a press statement.
Egypt's Sinai Peninsula has remained the epicenter of slew of terrorist attacks since the January 2011 revolution that toppled former president Hosni Mubarak.
The attacks grew in number post the ouster of Islamist ex-president Mohamed Morsi in 2013 by the military, following massive protests against his rule.
Hundreds of Egyptian security personnel have been killed in attacks across Sinai, especially the northeastern quadrant, which shares borders with both Israel and Gaza strip, reports said.
Earlier in September, Islamic State jihadists ambushed a police convoy, which killed 18 officers and wounded seven others in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. (ANI)
