Kabul [Afghanistan], Dec 2 (ANI): At least 40 passengers and drivers were abducted by the Taliban in Samangan province of Northern Afghanistan here on Sunday, Samangan police spokesman Mohammad Munir Rahimi has informed.
Tolo News quoted Rahimi saying that the passengers were taken hostage by Taliban in order to convince the drivers to pay the taxes. The incident took place at around 10 in the morning in Khushk Dara village of Dara-e-Soof district in Samangan province of Afghanistan.
Rahimi further mentioned that efforts for the safe release of the hostages were underway, reported Tolo News.
In a similar incident on Tuesday, Taliban had abducted at least 25 passengers traveling from Sar-e-Pul province to Mazar-e-Sharif in Afghanistan. Some women passengers among the 25 people kidnapped were later released.
Kidnapping and hostage-taking have become a common occurrence in Afghanistan following the US invasion of the country in 2001. (ANI)
