5.1 earthquake jolts Ecuador coast

Quito [Ecuador], Jan 9 (ANI): An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 jolted the coast of Ecuador on Tuesday.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake struck at 5:35 am (local time) on Tuesday morning and the epicentre of the quake was 271 km north of Puerto Ayora town in the Pacific Ocean.

Tremors were also felt in the Ecuadorian capital, Quito. However, no loss of life or property was reported.

Earthquakes are common in the South American country.

In 2016, a massive earthquake of magnitude 7.8 had struck Ecuador, causing widespread damage to lives and properties. The massive quake killed 676 people and injured more than 15,000. (ANI)
