Washington D.C [USA], Jan 31 (ANI): One person died after an Amtrak train carrying Republican lawmakers to an annual party meeting from Washington D.C to Virginia collided with a truck in Crozet in Virginia on Wednesday, according to White House.

According to a statement by Amtrak, the train hit a truck on the track at about 11:20 a.m. However, no one has been reported injured yet.

The train was carrying Republican lawmakers of the House and the Senate, along with wives, children and aides, the Washington Post reported.

Senator Mike Lee said that nothing had happened to the lawmakers and said that the train had hit a garbage truck when he reacted initially.

"We appear to have hit a garbage truck. It looks like it's been maybe cut in half. We can see garbage strewn around and we can see the back half of the truck. There was a feeling of an impact and you could feel we had hit something. It took us maybe a quarter mile to stop", said Lee.

Lee added that few of the lawmakers were only roughed up as they hit their knee or head on the seat when the train collided with the truck.

Another Senator, Thomas Massie called the crash "loud and surprising".

"Some minor bumps and bruises are there in this car. We saw debris go by the left side of the train. The part of the truck we can see was decimated. Very relieved when the train came to a stop and still on the tracks", Massie said.

Senator Jeff Flake narrated the ordeal.

"It was a hard impact. It threw everybody up in the air a little. I don't think anybody on the train is seriously injured, but I may be wrong", he explained.

Amtrak said that local law enforcement officials were investigating the incident and inspecting the train's equipment for possible damage.

US President Donald Trump is yet to react to the incident. (ANI)
