Senior Republican joins Democrats citing Trump's 'unacceptable behaviour'

Iowa [USA], Apr 24 (ANI): Andy McKean, the Republican Party's longest-serving state lawmaker here, has switched to the Democratic Party, citing US President Donald Trump's "unacceptable behaviour."
"With the 2020 President election looming on the horizon, I feel as a Republican that I need to be able to support the standard bearer of our party. Unfortunately, that is not something I am able to do," McKean said, referring to Trump.
The former Republican has served for 29 years in the legislature including stints in the House and Senate. He made his defection official at a news conference on Tuesday, reports CNN.
He outlined that he would be seeking re-election in 2020 as a Democrat. The senior politician also called Trump "a poor example for the nation and particularly for our children."
"He sets, in my opinion, a poor example for the nation and particularly for our children by personally insulting -- often in a crude and juvenile fashion -- those who disagree with him, being a bully at a time when we are attempting to discourage bullying, his frequent disregard for the truth and his willingness to ridicule or marginalize people for their appearance, ethnicity or disability," he stated.
This move comes as a setback to the Grand Old Party, as Iowa is a swing state. Trump won there by nearly 10 percentage points in the 2016 Presidential elections.
The party-switch comes in the wake of the redacted Special Counsel Robert Mueller's report being made public. Even though Mueller found no Russian collusion in Trump's campaign for the 2016 elections, he fell short of completely exonerating the incumbent President on obstruction of justice charges.
"I believe that it is just a matter of time before our party pays a heavy price for President Trump's reckless spending and shortsighted financial policies, his erratic, destabilizing foreign policy and his disregard for environmental concerns," McKean added.
"If this is the new normal, I want no part of it," he outlined, before joining the Democrats. (ANI)
