Gemalto launches first biometric EMV card for contactless payments

Updated:6 months, 1 week ago IST

New Delhi, Jan 07 (ANI): Credit card chips and sim cards making company, Gemalto has teamed up with Bank of Cyprus to come out with first of its kind biometric-powered credit card with a contactless technology. The EMV (Euro, Mastercard, Visa) will use fingerprint recognition instead of a PIN code for both chip and contactless payments. With the new technology anyone can authenticate a payment using their fingerprint instead of a PIN. Gemalto's biometric sensor payment card is based on the principle that biometric data should always remain in the hands of end users. Bank of Cyprus' customers will complete the swift enrolment process at the bank's branches, using Gemalto's tablet designed for the solution. Fingerprint technology has been in use in the industry but this time the initiative has been taken keeping in mind contactless payment. Mastercard last year announced a credit card that introduced biometrics in an effort to cut down on in-store fraud.
