9 newborns die at government-run Civil Hospital in last 24 hours

Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Oct 29 (ANI): In last 24 hours, at least nine newborns have died at a government-run civil hospital in Gujarat’s Ahmedabad. Around five of the deceased newborns were admitted in critical condition from other hospitals in the region. According to Dr. Gargi Pathak, the newborns that were brought from outside Ahmedabad were in critical conditions such as severe birth asphyxia, extreme preterm with birth weight 1.1 kg (usual 2.5 kg), hyaline membrane disease, septicemia. While, three babies born in Ahmedabad had severe birth asphyxia and one had meconium aspiration syndrome. The hospital has around 100 beds and is considered as the ultimate referral centre in Gujarat. The incident comes months after over 250 children died at BRD medical college in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur. It was alleged that lack of oxygen was the reason behind the deaths.
