Annual Hemis festival begins in Leh

Leh (J&K), Jun 25 (ANI): A much coveted festival, the Hemis festival kicked off in Leh today. The Tibetan Buddhist festival marks the tenth day of the Tibetan lunar month. By far one of the most fascinating festivals of the region, Hemis festival is held every year at the Hemis Monastery at Leh in Jammu and Kashmir. The festival is basically held to commemorate the birth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava, who is known to have founded Tantric Buddhism. An array of colours in the stunning mountainous region is witnessed by scores of visitors. The main attraction of the festival is the colorful mask dance by monks of the monastery wearing robes and performing a unique dance signifying good prevailing over evils. The mask dance and the traditional music enthrall the spectators who come from around the globe to participate in the celebration.
