Asom Gana Parishad ends alliance with BJP in Assam over Citizenship Bill

Updated:1 month, 2 weeks ago IST

Guwahati (Assam), Jan 07 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) regional Assembly partner Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) ended alliance over Citizenship Bill Row. “We have been saying from a long time that if Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 is brought in Lok Sabha we will end our relationship with BJP”, said AGP leader Dilip Patgiri while talking to ANI. “Our leaders met Home Minister and expressed that AGP is going to break the alliance”, he added. Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 is likely to be discussed in Parliament on Tuesday. However, the break-up will have little impact in the Assam Assembly as BJP won the 2016 Assembly Elections with 61 seats and have support of Bodo People's Front's 12 seats in 126 seat assembly to stay well above majority mark.
