Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir), Nov 26 (ANI): Jammu and Kashmir Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) began cleaning operations at the famed Dal Lake. The removal of lily weeds, which has a damaging effect to the ecological balance of the Lake is an integral part of the cleaning process. The unbridled growth of such weed, especially in the vital Hazratbal basin of the Lake, has already taken a heavy toll on the fragile ecosystem of the water body. After multiple cleaning drives using machinery, the J&K LAWDA is now relying on human power to clear lily pads within the lake. Environmental activists and experts too have critiqued the presence of lily weed in the Lake. LAWDA has deployed 1500 ‘skilled laborers’ for the task. Although the LAWDA has acquired weed harvesters and water masters for the weed control and removal purpose. The 1500 laborers are working in 42 sections of the infested area. The skilled laborers are extracting the weed by traditional methods. The thick growth of lily weeds hampers movement of Shikara and affects aesthetic beauty of the lake, as well. This operations claims to clear the weed from the Lake completely. Dal Lake is famous lake all over the World and every year lakhs of tourist visit the Lake.
