Congress demands Centre to declare Kerala floods as ‘national calamity’

New Delhi, Aug 18 (ANI): The Congress party has demanded that Kerala floods should be declared as a ‘national calamity’ by the central government. The Congress party also attacked the Centre for not doing enough for the victims of the tragedy. Congress leader PC Chako said, “Thousands and thousands are marooned and facing a very severe, critical situation and more emergency evacuation operation is needed. More Army and Navy units for evacuation is necessary in Kerala. What is being done is appreciable but it is not enough or adequate. Kerala expects the help of central government and from all states. We need more people to evacuate those people who are in distress.” Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said, “The way this tragedy has taken place in Kerala causing human and economic damage, this has disturbed the nation. Congress party has raised this demand from the first day that the flood situation in Kerala should be declared a national calamity.” Rescue operations by Indian Army, Navy & other teams are underway. Death toll has touched 324 following incessant floods.
