Hindu devotees whip themselves with ropes to please rain goddess in Coimbatore

Coimbatore, Dec 05 (ANI): Scores of people in Coimbatore participated in a procession for the traditional whipping festival. The festival is dedicated to the Hindu Goddess of rain, Adaikala Amman, who is believed to have arrived from Thanjavur to Coimbatore, around 300 years ago. During the festival, devotees hold fast for eight days during which they whip themselves with ropes and dance to the beats of the drums. The festival and especially the drum beats usually attract many spectators from nearby region.
