Illegal mining continues in Similipal National Park

Updated:1 month ago IST

Mayurbhanj (Odisha), Dec 16 (ANI): Government had declared Similipal National Park in Odisha as a Biosphere Reserve in 1994. United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) too added the national park to its list of Biosphere Reserves in May 2009. Similipal is however losing its charm, and glory every passing day. Illegal mining, including blasting, is continuing in several places of Similipal National Park, which has tremendous impacts on the wild life. Illegal mining is allegedly taking place under close collaboration of Forest Department as well as Revenue Department officials with criminal organisations. It has led to negative impact on ecology, wild life and forest governance. Poachers flourish under loose implementation of laws and misplaced rules and regulations, leaving room for corruption.
