Watch: Heavy rains lash several districts of Tamil Nadu as Cyclone Gaja nears

Cuddalore/ Nagapattinam (Tamil Nadu), Nov 16 (ANI): Cyclone Gaja which escalated to the ‘severe’ category on Thursday is set to make landfall on the coast of southern Tamil Nadu tonight. Cuddalore district, which is one of the first places the cyclone is set to make a landfall has started to receive heavy rainfall along with high wind speeds. Nagapattinam too witnessed the same weather. As the cyclonic storm Gaja is approaching the coast of South Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, the Indian Navy has been put on high alert for relief efforts. Residents have been advised to stay indoors during the rough weather. Two Indian Naval ships Ranvir and Khanjar are standing by to proceed to the most affected areas to undertake Humanitarian Aid Distress Relief (HADR), evacuation, the logistic support including providing medical aid. Cyclone Gaja is expected to make a landfall between Pamban and Cuddalore first. In an attempt to mitigate damage to properties and human lives, the state administration evacuated around 20,000 people residing on the coastal line and moved them to relief camps. Apart from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh is also bracing for the impact of the cyclone which is likely to bring heavy downpour and strong winds to several parts of the region for the next couple of days.
