Yaoshang festival commences, marks onset of spring

Imphal (Manipur), March 04 (ANI): Yaoshang festival is celebrated on the full moon day of phalguna purnim in Imphal. Main highlight of the festival is the Thabal Chongba (a folk dance). The festival marks the onset of spring and is celebrated with prayers, songs, dance and colours. Main highlight of the festival is the Thabal Chongba (a folk dance). The literal meaning of thabal is 'moonlight' and Chongba means 'dance', thus 'dancing in the moonlight'. As part of the festival, young boys and girls go from door to door collecting ‘Nakatheng’ (money that is spent for general merriment). ‘Yaoshang’ is often referred to as the Holi of Manipur state. The five-day festival began with devotees gathering for the burning of a thatched roof, created every year especially for the festivities, which is symbolic of the victory of good over evil. Special prayers were held in temples across the city. The prayers are followed by drenching each other in coloured powders and water.
