Youth from Naxal-hit Sukma becomes role-model for Adivasis

Updated:3 months ago IST

Sukma (Chhattisgarh), Sept 15 (ANI): Sukma district of Chhattisgarh is one of the worst-affected Naxal areas in the state. Reports of Naxal’s insanity make headlines every other day in Sukma. Thanks to their barbaric acts, very few doctors ever set foot in Sukma and even the ones who do come; they either leave the area fearing Naxal attacks or fall prey to their barbarism. The lack of medical facilities in his village and the district inspired an Adivasi youth to take the onus upon himself. Harish Podiyam, who had decided to pursue MBBS and become a doctor as early as when he was in eighth standard, not only fulfilled his dream by getting admission in Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College in Raipur, but has inspired a generation of Adivasi youths to rise above difficulties. A hero today, Harish’s life has been full of difficulties. During school, he didn’t even have money to buy books to prepare for exams. But a living example of perseverance, nothing could stop Harish from achieving his dream, not even the death of his father—the only bread earner of an extremely poor family—a few years ago in a road accident. While Naxals continue to disrupt life and terrorize people in the name of representing their voice, it is the youth like Harish who are the actual messiah of the Adivasi community. When the Naxals are inflicting one trouble after another in their lives, it is Harish and people like him who are working for the welfare of the Adivasis and are constantly working towards reducing their troubles. Harish Podiyam and his story is a lesson for the Naxals, a lesson that no matter how much terror they will try to inflict, the youth will never bow down to them and they, not the Naxals and their violent methods, will represent the Adivasi community.
